Ok, question I have is why are the 73 brown ikes SOOOOOO much more in price than the other years? Took me some leg work but I finally snagged one in the OGP for $23 but up until then they were going for $30+. I assume that the mintage for the "Brown" Ikes was low for 73?

When you bought a proof set from the mint in 71 and 72 it did not come with a Ike dollar, it had to be purchased separately in the 40% silver clad. In 1973 they came out with the copper nickle clad proof in the proof set so the silver clad saw less in purchases.

That's kinda what I had gathered, just seemed shocking that the 73 Brown was almost 3x what the 71 72 and 74 are going for, heck I got the 71 and 72 for $12 earlier this year, so I assumed 73 should be close......boy was I surprised but I still got a good deal at $23 I think.

They were only in mint sets. None of them were made for circulation.

There was also the problem that the 71 and 72 brown Ikes immediately collapsed on the aftermarket. When it came time to order the $10 1973 brown Ike the 71 and 72 were selling for $5. Rather than buy it again and lose money a lot of collectors decided not to buy. (Also this was the third year for the coin and the novelty had worn off.)

If you think they are expensive now, you should have seen them back in the 1980's. Back then the average, not high grade, 73 brown Ike reached the $150 range before it crashed.

Which is why my Eisenhower dollar set, started in 1978, was not completed until 1993. I had actually given up on them for a long time and accidentally discovered that the prices had come down to an affordable level.

Wow I never knew they ever got that expensive! Mine are not graded and are all in the Original plastic and Brown boxes. I now have proofs and clads of all years and Brown Ikes for 71-74. Just need the blue Ikes now.
