Hi I have an offer to buy this medal and found out some info on it but wanted to know if there were reproductions out there of it etc. The original medal states that it weighs 297.6 grains or 19.2 grams. It states no silver % content but a magazine ad shows the coin at .900 If the info I got stated that this coin was minted in Philly and with a mintage of only 40K back in 1928 then the mag. ad made me a little leery. I will see the coin in hand tomorrow but besides just weighing it what else should I look for. Below are generic pics. of the coin and not the actual one. Thanks http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums.../1925obv.jpghttp://i1020.photobucket.com/albums.../1925rev.jpg

That site showed a few values but did not want to sign up on it. Was still wondering if there were any after market copies of this medal as well as any info to it's actual silver content/weight. I know the weight of the medal but ?

There are two medals- thick and thin with the thin being the rarer of the two. The thick medal had a surviving mintage of 31,750 which accounts for leftover melting. It is supposed to be 90% silver and it looks original to me.

Well, I bought the thing today. No idea what I have now. It looks just like the medal I have in the pics. and it is silver (i hope :) but it weighs in on my scale at 5 troy ozs. and is 3" in diameter (tip to tip actually as it is octagonal) and 5 m.m. thick at the fields. No circulation wear and just a few tiny dings on the shield. Has a matte type finish like an older silver bar. Probably just bought myself a $20.00 paper weight. Oh well !

It may be worthwhile to perform a Specific Gravity test. I did a little searching on this fascinating octagon and I came across something from a Heritage auction that you might find interesting- Quote: 1925 Norse Medal--Brass Pattern--MS64 PCGS. CAC. This fascinating piece has the 1 1/4" diameter of the Thin and Thick silver Norse medals. The thickness is unknown due to encapsulation, but is presumably 1/20", the same as Thin medals. This is because the Thin medals were struck first, May 21-23, 1925. The 1/16" Thick medals were struck in late May and June. Eventually, 100 matte proof 1" gold Norse medals were struck, along with 75 medals in 2 5/8" silver-plated copper-bronze.

Thanks Bio for that info. Might have a winner here after all. That size diameter looks correct. It is silver I know that now at least on the outside. Want to now find out what the exact weight was on those 75 ea. made. Then a test as you suggest for content. The person I bought it off of is not into coins much but he saw it at a small antique shop in a rural town close to me. I know of the shop and it has been there forever. Your typical new england antique emporium. If all works out I better call a few of the TPG's and find out if they have a slab that big to put it in :) Would a drop test (safely on maybe some cloth etc.) help with a tone or ring ?

Update:
Waiting for some info back from pcgs. Calling ngc tomorrow. Found it to be a triple silver plated bronze. Swoger-24Aa I guess ngc has a couple certified. MS63/MS64 Will have to find out about them first I guess for any more info etc. Found these at Stacks but no price or pics. etc.

A dollar is 1.5 inches, so 3" is minimum for fakes. IIRC, the Norse medals were roughly dollar size. Enjoy your paperweight.

Might be just that. A paper weight. This is by the way a medal not a coin. But wonder why NGC would certify and slab 2 of these. And also why Stacks would have auctioned off two of these medals ? I was just verifying Bio's info that he posted. "along with 75 medals in 2 5/8" silver-plated copper-bronze" Have not heard back from PCGS (really don't care anyway:) NGC just received my pics./specs. on it and will at least get back to me on it. They have dropped slabbing a lot of medals lately that they used to do before. So it may not even be able to be looked at period. Just will have to wait and see. Either way, it is silver and how much I will know after the specific gravity test. So for $20.00 still a decent deal no matter what.

IIRC, the Norse Medals are listed in the RedBook. There are also so-called dollars. The originals are 2.625", not real close to 3". I can't understand why someone would make a silver copy, but I wish you luck!

Thanks for that info. No idea myself why someone would make a 5 troy oz. (exact weight) copy of a medal. The actual diameter (not sure even how they measured it on an octagonal medal) is 2 5/8" same as mine. I just rounded it up to 3" I did see some older mag. ads selling these medals and stating them as .900 silver. No dimensions were given however. So the one I have is either the Swoger-24Aa or 5 ozs. of 90% silver. Either way fine by me. No word from the TPG's. Maybe Swoger will read this :) 5 oz. troy in 90% equals 4.5 ozs. ASW so right now around $180.00 melt. So 9 times more than I paid for it. If it was flat on the reverse I might use it to keep my papers from flying around

http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/Stacks will be doing the auction on the NGC MS-64 Swoger-24Aa Medal. This is the one that I mentioned above. Same one as the one I have listed but slabbed naturally. I guess NGC is not interested in doing another one. I'll just wrap it up and put it in the closet. When I croak someone else can bother with it. Thanks all for your comments and help.
