I was wondering if any of you guys actually manage to buy mint rolls for face value from your local bank... I've bought quite a few rolls and though I've never specifically asked for mint rolls, I only get bank wrapped or even hand wrapped rolls. I suppose I'm not in a very central location, so I was wondering if that had any effect on whether my local banks get mint rolls...or if mint rolls don't tend to go to local banks either way. If you guys don't get them at the bank, is there an alternative source for mint rolls at face value, or is there always a surcharge on mint rolls?

I have gotten some mint rolls from the bank, but most of them are the clear plastic rolls

The clear plastic rolls are from Brinks,, the only place to get actual Mint rolls is from the mint, for which one arm and a leg are required as payment.
Most all coinage released for circulation is taken to a contractor such as brinks,, there are some Fed banks which still roll their own coins,,Most banks especially the smaller branch banks rely on the rolled coins of customers and seldom have the new coin rolls ,, It is possible to get them sometimes if you ask for them . I always go to the main branch banks or the Fed banks for my coin rolls and return them to the branches.

I did some looking into this here, I live near the Philadelphia Mint\Federal Reserve Bank. Some banks carry Fed rolls, but you have to make sure they are new coins, otherwise you will get a mixed roll. From what I understand after the coins are minted they are distributed Via the Fed and big companies like Brinks and are sent in big bags, then the Fed\Brinks put them into rolls. HEre is an email response I received from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. quote:
Mr. Derchak,
Sorry, the Federal Reserve Banks do not deal directly with the public for coin or currency. You will have to get the coin from a financial institution, or you can visit the US Mint website at https://www.usmint.gov
The US Mint does sell rolls of State Quarters to the public.

Now I went to a Commerce Bank and got a roll the the New South Dakota Quarters in a clear Fed wrap. I also got a roll of 2006 Nickels in a Dunlop Roll, they look to be brand new.

hm, so I guess it's luck of the draw. Probably easier to get them if you're living closer to philly or denver. I guess I'll have to just keep searching normal rolls for shiny ones :)... although the 2006 nickels are still very rare and neither the ND or SD quarters have made it to here -_-

Unfortunately there is some truth to what you say, there are areas of the country that do not see the new coinage for a long time after release. But dont give up !! Keep asking and if need be go to a larger city and ask around the banks there, I know that I have alot of luck when in Elpaso, and Albuquerque Rick

I go to my local branch banks when I know the quarters are coming out. I already know they will getting them tomorrow. One roll per customer. So I will be hitting several of my branches tomorrow making my rounds and getting several rolls.
