Greetings all,

I would like your opinion on this tet from the selucid empire please. Do you think its genuine or fake(cast)?
I dont have the coin in hand but it looks a cast copy to me. There seems to be traces of air bubles on the obverse and the reverse. And there are fishy marks on both sides as well, straight lines that is on almost everywhere. And there aren't much details on both side, they're faded away.

Also do you know which emperor is it? Because I did alot of reasearch to try to find any similer coin to see

who could that be but got nothing.

31mm dia and weight 15.3 g (very large). I zoomed in on his chin. See the straight lines and bubles?

Thanks alot for anything you could give me !

Regards,

Pat

The edges looks too sharp and the surface has what appears to be lots of air bubbles which to me would indicate a copy. On the other hand, the details are sharp and clear as expected from a struck coin. I don't know enough about Greek coinage to say for sure.

I know very little about Ancient Greek coins and I'm only not real sure of myself regarding fakes vs genuine. So, I have posted your question to some other collectors and we'll see what answer they come up with.

Any chance of more close-ups? Is it silver-plated

My acquaintances say that It looks genuine. The surfaces in the close-up are very convincing. They agree though that it looks suspicious in the smaller pictures. But its not Seleucid, but Nikomedes II of Bithynian kingdom and more probably this one: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=5240, but different regnal year.

I'm sorry for the many messages, but another acquaintance says it is a well known fake. I went to the Forgery Network and found many that look similar. I will try to link to this page. http://forgerynetwork.com/viewasset...20&srchall=0

Thank you achizento and jwarper. Her are more close ups. The thing is you cant add pics bigger then 100k here :

The obverse and the reverse are washed out. This is more visible on the reverse. This doesn't look like a natural warn out thing to me. Without forgeting the many tiny pits of course. Could that has been caused by being dropped in some kind of a acidic solution?

I'm sorry to tell you, but the consensus is that your coin is a fake and if you look on the two sites I previous identified, you can't come away with any other conclusion.

I know how it feels to have a fake identified. It gives you a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. If you own this see if you can get a refund. If you were thinking about buying - DON'T.

Again, sorry

Thank you jwarper for your concern. But I don't own this tet nor I'm planing on byuing it. Someone asked my opinion and I replied that it looks like a fake to me, a cast of a genuine tet. Although I haven't seen a tet like it before so I had no idea about these tets styles. I didn't have the coin in hand only pics and these were enough to give my opinion. But then to be sure I posted it here on coincommunity.

Thanks again for your help and to all those who tried to help, thank you.

Kind regards,

Pat
