I have quite a few rolls of BU cents. I have offered them on ebay in the past and marveled that no one really seemed that interested in purchasing them. I sold a roll of 1957 & 1958 BU cents for about $5 with $5 for postage. Does that seem like a fair price? If you look at trends for a MS63 of either date, I would think that it was a steal.

Your thoughts?

why not sort them, and certify the best ones, and then sell the gems for real money? I think most people who steer clear of rolls assume that they've already been cherry-picked. If you know they haven't, then why not do it yourself?

Too much trouble to send it out. I live in the states, sending coins to Canada to get graded, I don't think so. I am only going to send in coins that are really of some value not Elizabeth cents.

Colhand1:

Any Canadian cent after 1952 would be a 'lizabeth cent. Indeed some of these cents have very good values in BU condition. Don't condemn a portion of a coin series because it is the newer end.

To all the Canadian viewers I apologize for my fellow 'murrican's statement.

The sad reality is that there is really a pretty limited market even for good quality cents from these years these days. Depending on volume, you might pay $10 to have an ms 65 certified only to sell it on ebay for $15. Plus you might certify an ms64 by mistake or pay $2 ICCS per coin to avoid such rejects. There is not much to be made by buying rolls of cents, unless you buy them very cheaply or get lucky and get an ms66, some varieties or a lot of 65s.

I don't condemn the Elizabeth coins - I in fact like the early dates - 1953 to 1960. I just can't commit money to getting cents graded, it doesn't make sense to me. They just are never going to be that valuable. My whole point is that someone could buy a roll of BU Cents and find that special one for a fraction of what it would cost them to buy the individual coin. Rolls do not sell well, I see it time and again on ebay.
