Up for community grading is this 1854 Half Cent. I couldn't quite capture the way it shimmers and its mirror like luster. It has bluish iridescent toning areas that the photo just captures as dull blue or dark areas. I've researched the parallel lines and I believe them to be striations, not whizzing or cleaning marks. Since they stop at the LIBERTY head and appear to go under it, it seems that they were on the planchet before it was stamped. One reference I used is here:

What say you all on the unc grade, the toning, and the lines ?

Could this be a roughly handled proof ?

Thanks kindly
botar

Don't know as I really know nothing about this series, but she's a beauty.

IMHO it is au - ms. I am having trouble clearly seeing the hair below the coronet. In the 4th pic down I can kinda see the hair detail that makes me lean towards ms. That is just my guess. Either way she is a looker!

Aw, man, I wish I'd seen this coin before. What a stunning copper.

The photographs are not quite up to a standard which would allow me to express a certain opinion regarding circulation, but the color and details I can see certainly reinforce the impression that this one is as-minted. No worse than AU58, and an absolutely primo example regardless.

The striations you mention are, in fact, on the planchet.

I don't think it's a Proof; this is a big-league scarcity in Proof, and those strikes are known for exactness which isn't present on this coin, especially on the reverse details.

Following my gut? PCGS would grade it AU58, and I would, given the chance, slap the grader for his lack of courage for not calling it MS63.

Definitely unc details minimum in my opinion. Hard to say more without better pics.
