Welcome to the forum....

Sacagawea dollars began being minted in 2000 in accordance with the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997. These coins were made to replace the unpopular Susan B. Anthony dollar coins which were often confused with Quarters because of their similar size, similar ridged edge, and identical color. To remedy this problem, Sacagawea dollars were given a smooth outside edge (similar to the Nickel) and distinctive gold color which makes it the only gold-colored coin in the United States that is currently circulating. Despite a major promotional blitz by the United States government, these coins failed to gain popularity with the general public, and mintages of the coins declined sharply after the first year, just as mintages of the Susan B. Anthony dollar had done 21 years earlier. Although they were released for general circulation only in 2000 and 2001, Sacagawea dollars are still being minted on a small scale for collectors and are available in uncirculated coin rolls, Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and Special Westward Journey Sets from the United States Mint. The coins are widely available in New York City, where the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the state agency that runs the New York City Transit System subways and busses, uses the coin in their machines for change up to six dollars.

hi coin girl, I read your question as wanting to know when the very earliest Sacagwea dollar was minted. So I can tell you this much:

The actually minting of the coin had to be sometime during the late fall of 1999 as it is a fact that ICG graded and encapsulated one of the first Sacagawea dollars on Dec.21, 1999. The earliest release through the federal banks was in 2000. By then millions of coins had been minted and just waiting to be called out to the banks.
Here is a good web site for you to read about the coin:

Enjoy your self.

If you are interested in collection Sacagawea dollars, the Cheerois veriety is an interesting and expensive one. For the Millennium the mint and Cheerios joined forces to place 1 million 2000 dated cents and 5,000 dated Sacagawea dollars. A few years ago it was discovered that the Cheerios dollars were different. On the reverse of the coin the eagle has one large tail feather instead of two. The large tail feather is much more detailed than normal dollars. Of course the Cheerios dollar will cost you well over 1,000 dollars, so it makes it an expensive addition to that series.

Metalman, I was just shown what the new Presidential dollars will look like, by Gary Burke (my granfather). I do think that I will collect them.

And to answer your question, yes I am collecting Sacagawea dollars.

Hi Dsking!

Ya my grandpa is THE Gary Burke, the wonderful, the marvelous....or not Gary Burke.

And he has gotten me a lot of coins that are going to be worth a lot of money. Most importantly, he talked me into being a YN.

well bye!

I'm one of the privileged few here on the CCF that has met your Grandfather and he's a superb person as well as a great historically knowledgeable individual. FYI...I'm from the Front Range but, am temporarily stuck in AZ taking care of my elderly Father. I met Gary at the ANA last August. Again, coingirl, welcome! Your Christmas list is sure to grow!!!!!!!!!!
