I am currently going through and grading notes
from my step dads collection. Working on the indo china/caledonia as well as the algerian notes I noticed a P/H
after the Pick #. I checked the glossary and it states P/H
means pin holes. Is this correct ? If so is this normal for these notes as I see very tiny pin holes on a few and the notes are in the EF+ AU grades. Should they be graded normally
at the lower grade for a note with pin holes in it or graded
differently because of the P/H designation after the Pick # ?
Thanks for any help/info

I've had a look at the Krause catalogs and they do mention pinholes and staple holes in the intro section. The staple holes are self-explanatory (I know in India, at least, they regularly staple bundles of same denomination notes). If it states P/H in the catalog then it is probably accepted as fairly normal and would not overly affect the grade. The values in Krause are just a very rough guide anyway and may be years out of date. You would probably get a fairer idea if you can find any on say ebay that specifically mention pinholes.
Tried the web but nothing specific jumped out.

O.K. Thank you.
Guess that is the best thing to go ahead and do then.
Following the grading guides I have seen and used it's tough
though to take a decent AU+ note and then hold it up to the light to see two tiny pinholes in it and have to put it as an F grade.

That guide sounds pretty unreasonable to drop it so low just for two pinholes. If they can't be noticed except by holding them to the light that makes them only a minor defect.

The A in AU stands for Almost so it is already a qualification that such a grade is not perfect. Drop the + and I think AU (PH) would be a fair notation to give it, from what you have described.
