Hello everyone,

Unfortuently my grandfather recently passed away which resulted in my coming across a heavy and large collection of coins. The majority of them are of poor condition but they date back to 1806. I'm assuming that my great grandmother was a coin collector and by the look of things she enjoyed it...

Apart from the odd franc and deutschmark there is alot of pennies and old coins from Britain. There is also money from colonial India and various other periods from Queen Victorias reign, King George V to Queen Elizabeth II.

Theres also medals and coins for royal weddings etc but looking at your forum structure that's for a different section... I was wondering if this is of interest to anyone or if theres any value involved.

I will be looking at them all in detail tommorow and reporting back to see if any of them are interesting.

Thanks

Hello Gibbs. Welcome to the forum I am Deeply sorry for your Loss. By the way I went to school with a Kid in Pennsylvania Named Jason Gibbs , Edinboro Area, To estimate our inherited collection with out seeing it IS Impossible . If you could Take some pictures of each item . Most on this forum would be able to help. Sorry And a lot of people would be interested , but there is a rule here for Our safety and yours That you can not sell or trade until you reach 50 post's . This for our safety as well as yours , and is a means to protect our great members . They run a tight ship here , and with so many scam artists out there they try to protect everyone . But if you could at least come up with A reasonable condition of Date , Country etc. You might have a rarity and You Might Not. Good Luck And I hope we can Help... JIM

Hi Gibbs, Welcome to the forum.

Coin collecting is a good hobby... that if, at the moment, your not interested in can be put aside and years from now the value will have increased. The most valuable part of a collection is the history, that this collection is from your grandparents, so don't be quick to give it away.

With a large collection first sort the coins by Country, then by denomination, then by year. With a sort like that many members on the forum can tell you if there is anything extremely rare or of great value. The condition of the coin is a major factor in determining the value. Don't clean the coins. Cleaned coins loose lots of value for a collector.

Calling ALL POMS

Now that I have unpolitically correctly gotten your attention

This bloke is from England and I have looked through the membership list and we are rather sparse on our membership there - is there anyone who know of a good contact in England who can help him out or do we just encourage him to post his coins here

Welcome Gibbs !!!

You may very well find that after you take some photos of the coins, discuss them here, and start studying them like many of us do, you might just decide to keep those coins and begin collecting them yourself. I know that has happened to several people.

Stick around and enjoy !!!

I suggest that you aquire a Krause Standard Catalog of World coins and spend some time looking up your coins and their values. Costs about 60 USD. You can get one on Amazon or https://www.Krause.com. Or maybe pick up an old one on ebay.
