I got a nice haul of halves and large dollars at the bank today and found some nice silver pieces, but one in particular seemed odd. I read that for Eisenhower dollar coins, the silver ones were only minted in San Fransisco, but I found a bicentennial one with a D mint mark (type II).Its fairly worn (sharp features, but with lots of scratches and some tarnishing), but doesn't have the dark band on the side that you see for regular ones and it has that silver 'look'. Are there any silver ones that were minted in Denver or am I missing something?

My girlfriend will be taking it to her work tomorrow to weigh it. Hopefully, it weighs 25 instead of 23 grams (to the precision of the postage meter at her work) since, from what I read, that will be the best indicator.

I would agree with above and say it has been plated. That eroded spot near the rim is likely where the electrode was attached to the coin when it was plated.

It was weighed an it is close to the 24.49 (compared with a control coin too) but I suppose that could be from the plating? I was wondering about what spots on the rim were and it makes sense that that's where electrodes were placed. It's a bit disappointing, but at least I had some other good finds that day. Would it be something worth taking to a dealer for input or is it a lost cause? Thanks for the input!

I have to agree as well, it looks plated.

However, I have always said that there is no such thing as a bad Eisenhower dollar.

There is no harm in having to take it to a dealer. Just make sure you dont sell it to them.
