Hello, I have a question about a coin I won....actually traded for some poker chips I won playing in a texas hold'em tourney, but anyways..

It's a 1872 seated liberty silver dollar.

I never collected coins so I have basically no knowledge about this stuff, so I first I looked up "1872 silver dollar" on ebay and found them going from $20 to about $300.

After doing a little more research I came across coinfacts.com. According to that site the seated libertys from 1840-1865 had no "in God we trust" motto on them, and from 1866-1873 the motto was put on them...So now, I'm wondering what's going on with my coin because it does NOT have the motto on it.

What do you guys think of this? Is the info I found wrong? Is the coin a rare "misprint" or whatever? Is it counterfeit? What would you estimate the value at? It seems to be in decent condition.

Kind of neat holding the coin though, it's 101 years older than me....if it could only talk. It'd be neat to know what people purchased with it back in the 1800's and early 1900's...

I hate to type the same thing twice in a row, but there's not a chance that your coin is real. It's a physical impossibility for an 1872 dollar to lack the motto, as the master die used to create all the working dies which struck them had the motto on it.

Hi Bucknut

The information given by coinfacts is correct, and thus the information given by Dave is also correct,, the coin cannot be authentic if the design does not include the Motto.

I hope that the chips were not worth much ? since the coin has little or no value depending on if its made from silver or some other base metal, or very low content silver.

Thanks guys...I was kind of thinking it could be counterfeit. Mainly due to where I live, in Turkey (Incirlik AB). The shops right out the gate make just about anything from Nike to shotguns to Starter jerseys, you name it they'll make it or get it made.

I traded it with a friend who told me it was worth $4...so I wasn't expecting too much. It looks very authentic though - it looks like it has been around a while, it even has smoothed edges.

Carefull with what you do with that coin. Over the years numerous coins are found of all demominations with missing letters and/or numbers. Usually this is caused by the dies beigh blocked by a substance like grease. However, there could be many other reasons and counterfeit is just one of them. Not sure of where you live but I go to about 3 coin shows a month and error coins and counterfeits are lately way up there in value. If your coin is a fake, counterfeit, and a good one, it could actually be worth a lot to collectors of such items.
