Found it in the bottom of a box of rolled wheats
along with some other coins.
Coin was in a flip. Seems to go EF grade.
38 m.m. diameter (normal)
3.8 m.m. thick (normal)
Reeding normal
Denticles seem normal
Only 22.5 grams (normal should be 27.2 grams)
Scans are showing actual reverse die rotation of the coin.
Either it is 160 degrees or 200 degrees off. My spatials
are off today :)
Note polished off arrow fletchings as well as some of the lower right reverse denticles.
Strange part is, it rings of silver.
We know that there are no P mint 1878 Trade dollars minted as business strikes, just proofs.
No sign of an "S" mintmark ever being there either.
Just wanted to share. At the worse either a decent conversation piece/learning aide or some silver value.

below the talon.

Doesn't look authentic to me, but I don't even have one at the moment!

And how did THAT get into a box of pennies!?

Almost certainly zero silver content. Specific gravity would be about 8.55, sounds like a nickel zinc alloy

Yes, most definate a knock off but thought it was interesting.
No harm to do a simple spec. gravity at home with it. I'll even give it a little dip bath or a slight rub :)You find all kinds of stuff at flea markets. There were 7 rolls of wheats
along with it in a small box so said what the heck for $7.00
might as well pick it up. Some 1919 through 1929 wheats mostly
along with 2 rolls of 40's/50's. A couple decent 20's with S's
I've seen better as well as worse knockoffs of these than this one. Maybe it was a P proof at one time ?
