1888-50-Cents-Obv.-4Hey guys,

I got these pics from the Canadian Numimsatic Company. They claim that it is an 1888 obv. 4 50 cent piece. I was so excited when I saw the add in Canadian Coin News, but when I saw the pics I was disappointed. The coin does not look like the obv. 4 to me. It looks more like obv. 2.

I know the pics are a little tiny, but I just don't see the enough of the typical features of the 4th obv. to know that it truly is one.

Does anyone think this is the rare obv. 4? .

The biggest difference is the wear patterns evident on the face. The 4th obv. was meant to show a more 'mature' portrait of Victoria. What this means is that it shows the pudginess in her cheeks, and the doubling of her chin is very pronounced. Another deciding factor is the upper lip- if it curls, then you are looking at the 4th obv.; if not, then it is obv. 3...

These are the features that I tend to use when identifying portrait types of Victorian halfs in a variety of grades.

Taking your pic and blowing it up a bit, to get a good look at the facial features I am inclined to believe this is the obverse 3.
The chin and cheeks are the give away , the chin is a little more pronounced and the cheeks are alot less jowely than the obverse 4.
In an obverse 4 coin the portrait would resemble someone sucking on a large candy.

From my experience, the best way to indentify an obv. 4 from and obv. 2 is to look at exactly where the doubling of the chin ends as well as the degree of doubling.

obv. 2 = slight doubling of chin evident, doubling of chin ends far from neck
obv. 4 = pronounced doubling of chin with doubling extending closer to neck

I will try to find some nice pics to show you exactly what I mean
