As many of you know, I have been going through my coins, rephotographing and cataloging, and I've come up with a few coins of which I have been suspicious. Well, I love the looks of this coin. It is in choice condition, which, in an of itself, makes me suspect. I would appreciate anyone taking a stab at authentication.

Pupienus Denarius RIC 4
OBV: IMPCMCLODPVPIENVSAVG - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
REV: PAXPVBLICA - Pax seated left, holding branch and scepter

I'm afraid this one is too close to this FORVM Fakes Database example - look particularly at the shape of the branch and the shape of specific letters, like VBLI in PVBLICA on the reverse, and the E in PVPIENVS on the obverse. I'm seeing direct letter-for-letter matches with the shapes of those letters on that fake, and nothing that's distinctly different. This one and this one also seem to be identical; about half the fakes of this type on FORVM seem to be of this same die. Now compare these same shapes with the four genuine examples on Wildwinds - no matches.

Sorry to be the bearers of bad news once again.

Although I hate to hear it, its what I thought as well. Especially the branch shape.

SAP,if I didn't want to know I shouldn't post it, right? No, SAP, I want to know and I appreciate the honesty. I also put a lot of stock into your opinions.

Regards,

JW
