Ignoring the variety for the moment, what do you see? I need confirmation that my eyes aren't playing tricks on me. (I did not adjust the color/levels on the photos) Edited by DVCollector 08/21/2011 1:16 pm

My gut reaction was a heavy scrubbing--past the original patina. I'll leave this till the evening, then post the grade.

I would grade it VF20, full "liberty" but many marks and wear. I also agree with the cleaning.

Obverse has IMHO seen a significant cleaning based on the colors you are showing. Not at all knowledgeable on the series ... but using my photo-grade references I am going to agree with VF20 - Details. David Edit ... You mentioned PCGS ... so I have to assume they came back with a "Genuine" grade ... can't imagine how they missed what appears from here to be an obverse cleaning.

Does it get Snow 1 better? I see what could be the base of the "7" under the last "8" but would need larger pics to get a better idea.

So...I went over to Heritage to see if there were examples of the 1888/7 S-1 I hadn't seen before. And, I came across this recent auction. I actually wasn't looking for controversy! Reading the description of the obverse as "chocolate brown" makes me wonder if the photos are off? However, that doesn't explain the surfaces of the obverse. I've scrutinized a lot of IHCs, but I still don't consider myself anywhere near an expert. But, you know what? I do think PCGS should be experts, and even-handed in their grading--rarity or not. Does it look like there's corrosion? Does it look cleaned? Does the color look wrong? Yes, yes, and yes! So here's the slab. That CAC sticker just.... grates on me, I wish I could reach in and peel it off.

it has the telltale rim Cud by the 'e' in united. PCGS is so unpredictable with their grading it seems. Nice coin though - and you can't beat the variety! which reminds me, i'll have to start looking for these @ coin shows!

Agreed--it's the rarity of this coin; it wouldn't have been slabbed otherwise. Still, I cannot imagine cleaning the crust that must have been on that coin. It's possible they only discovered the overdate after that scrubbing.

Plus I do not agree with that grade at all, VF details, probably, but not VF30. If PCGS and CAC consider this a choice coin, then I need to start sending more stuff in. I do agree that the rarity of this coin is why it is slabbed problem free.
