I have a US Trade dollar (marked with grains of silver) that, if you hit it just right, opens to reveal a photo of the wife of the Gov. of Mass. back in the early 1900s. Has anyone seen this before?

That is very strange. Probably a custome made coin. Could be worth a lot. could be worth little. I for one, could not tell you.

The coin is packed away right now from when I moved. I doubt it is worth much since it has been cut in order to open. My grandmother nursed the wife of the Gov. back in the day, and that was part of a collection of mementoes that the Gov.'s wife gave to her. Just wondered whether anyone else had one.
Thank you for replying.

If it is a high quality period hinged Trade Dollar(aka box or opium dollar), then it certainly has much more value than an ordinary damaged coin. In some cases, the hinged dollar is worth more than the host coin would be in an undamaged state. If you can tie in a historical pedigree, that could add even more value. http://www.apmex.com/Product/61219/...ram_100.aspx

Box or "opium" dollars are definitely worth a premium. Many of them were used as a locket to hold a loved ones picture. If the person in the picture can be identified that is worth and extra premium.
A lot of these were made at the Columbian Exposition of 1893. There was a booth on the exhibition grounds that made them for people. The customer paid a modest fee and supplied the coins. The artisan made their money from the fee and the silver cut from the coins.

Someone did some nice work on that locket--I like the turned surfaces.

These cut out coins are quite scarce. There was a time about 30 years ago where you could almost always find one at a major coin show and now you're lucky to see one anywhere at all. A dealer I know recently bought one and he showed it off at the last coin club meeting. He paid $425.oo for it if I remember correctly. He was thrilled to get it at that price and it isn't for resale, he's keeping it. Ed ANA LM-3175
