I recently run across a roll of nickels that I brought back from a trip to Reno Nevada. They are wrapped in Fitzgeralds paper. This casino shut down a few years ago, and has reopened as something other than a casino.

I probably got this roll in 1987 or so. It could have been the early 90's, but not more recent than that.

I am wondering if I will destroy any value by busting it open.

Opinions?

That depends, what value do you think it has now other than face value? If there is a premium for the wrapper it might be worth holding onto but I can't imagine why it would. Probably a better chance of older nickels, buffaloes or War Nickels that would be worth more than the wrapper.

That's the thing, I was wondering about it being from a defunct casino.

However, it has not been gone that long ago, so there may not be any reason not to check it out.

Here is how to test if you should keep it intact.
1) does it hold any sentimental value to you?
If so, keep it intact
2) ask ten people if they have ever heard of that casino.
If more than one person says they have never heard of it, it wasnt famous enough for anyone to put a premium on it as a collectible. In that case see what you have inside.

Fitzgerald's is still in business, just not in Reno.

Being from a casino, the slots have probably chewed them up pretty good. But I'd still bust them out.
