Hello everyone, It has been a very long time since I posted here on the coin forum. I have been active over on the stamp forum. Recently I have had the means to get a couple of coins I have always wanted. One of these is an 1859 Liberty Seated dollar. It just arrived and I am I suppose overly suspicious. Here is the problem. When you flip the coin from top to bottom, the other side is upside down. In other words it is in medal alignment and not coin alignment. My question is should I be overly concerned. How common is it for a liberty Seated dollar to exhibit this property. Thank you very much for any comments. I will be so appreciative. I anticipate becoming a little more active here in the coin forum.

Thanks SuperDave. I have contacted the seller and informed him of the likelihood of the coin being a fake. Will see his response. His ebay site says no refunds. But surely this can't be true if the coin is a fake.

If it is fake you can file a "significantly not as described" claim against him and you will be reimbursed even if the seller has a no return policy.

Luckily the seller has agreed to a refund. Will have to wait and see if it comes through.
I knew something was wrong the minute I saw the "coin". When I saw the medal alignment, the alarm bells were clanging loudly. Also, there was just an "off" appearance to the obverse. The area of the shield just did not seem right.
Again, thanks for the replies. I have been plowing through several of the threads here and was hooked on the 7070 display of types.

Should have posted a photo of that coin. Might have helped in determining it's authenticity.

Just wanted to follow up and say that I received a full refund, even though the original listing said no refunds.
Now I have a question for the forum---Just how should I leave feedback, or should I leave no feedback at all. If I tell the full truth in feedback, it will be bad for the seller. There is a small chance that the seller did not know the coin was fake. (I don't necessarily believe this) So what should I do?

I would leave Positive feedback. It's a tough proposition to prove there was deliberate deception; heck, if the seller goes through a lot of coins, it might just have escaped him in the volume of business even if he were capable of detecting the fake.
But when it came to crunch time, the seller did the right thing by you. For that reason, I consider it a positive transaction.

I agree positive feedback is warranted in my opinion. Looks like the seller had your happiness in mind not his own.

Positive. Seller listened to you and went through with the refund.

Probably positive, but look through his feedback first. If you see a number of claims of fake coins then this guy may do it knowingly and just banks on only a small number of people noticing, but when they do he gives a refund so that ebay doesn't get involved.

I would leave positive feedback, but in the text field, I would state "Coin likely not authentic, full refund received." So in other words, like mom and dad taught me, simply tell the truth. Really, how can anybody argue that?
I've lost patience with soft pedaled seller feedback, especially the comments. The above feedback would be beneficial to me as a prospective buyer from this seller for any item. It most certainly would help potential buyers if the coin is listed again. And if this was by chance a pattern, wouldn't you have liked to have similar comments available as part of your decision making process?
Hope you find that elusive 1859 Seated Lib Dollar someday!

I would give positive feedback as well, the seller did right by you in giving a refund.

Sounds like this one is amicably settled. I'd have weighed the "coin" as it's likely underweight.
