Does anyone have an internet reference or article concerning the legality of owning the 1933 double eagle, the 1943 bronze Lincoln Cent, and the 1913 Liberty nickel? Recently ten of the 1933 double eagles were confiscated as stolen property. I believe the 1943 bronze cent, if mistakenly minted and then sneaked out of the mint, would be stolen property. On the other hand, if the 1913 Liberty nickels were simply struck from an existing die, though unauthorized, the coins would not be stolen property if the original owner paid for them. Has there been any updated news on the status of the ten 1933 double eagle which were sent to the mint (on advice from an "attorney"?) for verificaton and then confiscated? How did King Farouk, even though he had obtained an export licence, manage to get possesion of a 1933 double eagle? I would certainly argue that the 1933 double eagles, if obtained through an exchange of gold coin or in exchange for gold certificates before March 1933, are not stolen property (although the mint employee or government official who dealt with those coins may have been guilty of embezzlement or conversion).

You know, all these seem ridiciously absurd - drama. And thanks to that, it makes such coins more "valuable".

You are right, gxseries, as the 1933 coin looks and feels exactly line the million or so 1932 coins that were issued and not illegal. So what is the beef?

ya forgot the 1964-d Peace dollar. apparently, each employee was allowed to purchase two of them. but when they were ordered to be melted, supposedly all of the coins got back to the mint.
