It's interesting that the the treasury has been ordered to make paper money that will be distinguishable to the blind. The idea certainly seems worthy of debate, but I find it interesting that the idea only surfaces now in 2006. How has the blind population managed all these years? I don't know any blind people and I've never given this much thought. I guess blind folks need honest help folding various denomination differently for identification.

Overall, it's sounds like it's going to be expensive to change the process. Thoughts?

I think it is a good idea that something should be done for the blind but how does a district judge order the Treasury to make such changes?

Different size notes would be about the only option.

If you add braille to all denominations it would definitely aid in bill identification. I would like to know if other countries are currently using either size of paper money or braille to distinguish the different denominations.

I couldn't get the link to work.... probably my computer being stupid!

I think that this is a good idea as well. I cannot imagine being blind and how difficult it must be to go about daily routines that we take for granted. This should make it a bit easier for keeping track of money at least.

I wonder if adding the braille will also make counterfeiting more difficult? This has been a major focus lately with all the new features on the bills.

In Oz, all notes are different sizes. I can't say for certain when this was introduced, but it was a fair while back. As I understand it, it was to make it easier for the blind to identify the diff denominations. There's sure to be another Aussie member who will be able to cite facts more accurately than I.

It makes so much sense. Makes me wonder what took so long. I also like the idea of different sized notes, that seems to make more sense than putting braille on notes.
