Getting back to Irene, its looking like a worst case track right now. Storm of a "lifetime". If I lived in NYC I'd be getting a bugout bag packed now.

I live in Eastern NC and the storm has shifted slightly to the west and forecasters are saying it should make landfall around Morehead City instead of taking the path where it would nip the outer banks and make landfall around the NYC area. I think we are about to get slammed on Saturday here in NC. I live about 1 1/2 hours from Morehead City. Going by what the meterologist are saying "now" I think NYC will miss a direct hit...then again we are still about 48 hrs out so anything can change.........

Connor- keep your head down. Looks like this one's goin to be a ripper. I lived down in The Keys and we got hit while I was there. That's the only time I ever got knocked off of my feet by the wind. If you like your car park it in a big open parking lot. I had my Vette crushed by a big tree that hit it square on.

Best of luck to the folks out east!
don't mean to pull the conversation back to the sun, but it's one of my interests, having been taught by a professor that studied geomagnetic storms. @hawk: I wouldn't read too much into the doomsday predictions. Geomag storms can knock out power grids and cause premature deterioration in metal pipelines, but to this day, we can only forecast accurately what's going to happen in the few hours, and at best muster yearly trends. If it's not pseudo science this guy is peddling then he should earn a Nobel (or start a religion :)

And I thought I was off topic on one of my post. "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." Button down the hatches here comes Irene.

Where I live in Mass, I'm more worried about plummeting pines and oaks than PM's. Plus, if the electricity goes out, no CCF fix!

I live in a rural area in eastern NC and have been through these hurricanes my entire life (Floyd, Dennis, Fran, etc...). One thing for sure is I always have respect for these storms. Not only do you have to worry about the high winds, heavy rain, and flooding but also the spawning of tornadoes. This is where alot of the damage inland comes from. They are comparing this storm to Hurricane Fran back in the late 90's and tornadoes caused a lot of damage inland during that storm. All you can do is sit back, watch, and be prepared. I will probably not have internet access for a few days. Hurricanes have knocked power out for weeks in the past. Time will tell...Maybe I can get some of my PM's orgainzed during the storm.

Definitely good luck. I live in Western New York so we will get some fringe rain and some really cool looking cloud banks. Keep your heads low fellow right coast inhabitants.

I am sitting right in the path of the storm here in eastern N.C. so PM's are the least of my worries right now. Locally it is a very good time to invest in water, canned food, and batteries. As Connor said, we will probably be offline for a few days, I suspect sometime early Saturday morning we will lose power, but we will see you on the other side sometime next week. For you guys in NY I wish you luck and may God be you.

I agree poboxw, as only humans like him, could have the audacity to think they could be smart enough to accurately predict what our sun is gonna do at any given time. It could blow up in the next second, or in the next 4 billion years, no one really knows when it will super nova....
And hang in there east coast, button down the hatches an prepare for the worst....

Back at ya brother. I have one heck of a job ahead of me today. All the head folks at the company I work for are from Kansas and have never been through a hurricane before. They have been planning for Irene all week long and so far we have accomplished nothing. I tried to get them to buy me some plastic yesterday to cover $22 million in electronics I have in my building, but all I got was "lets wait and see". My boss called last night and asked if I knew where to get some because everyone in Kinston is sold out. I will get them the plastic today. The wife has plenty in stock at her store in Pink Hill, but they will pay full price today, not my price that I could have gotten it for yesterday. So with that said, my folks and I will have to kick it into high gear to get prepped.
