Hi,

I'm new to the forums. I work at a local jewelry store and thought I'd join the forum to get help with my questions. I'm new to coins in general. Hopefully, I'll be able to help some of you folks too. Anyways...

I have a 1795 large cent. It has a large "2" stamped into the obverse and what looks like a "W" stamped into the reverse. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why these were put here. Was it some sort of moneychanging stamp? Was someone just testing a stamp back in 1795? Was it advertising? Any ideas? Also it worthless from a collecting standpoint?

Thanks in advance. (Hopefully pictures below)

I'm no expert, but I think it's post mint damage in which someone punched a stamp into it. I know it decreases the value but some do collect stamped coins.

It looks like some sort of merchant counterstamp. Businesses used to stamp stuff on large cents and then spend them to get more customers. Possibly if you found one you got a discount on something.

As I dont collect counterstamped copper, many others do, and so its still a very collectable large cent.

Maybe someone else will know what it stands for.

It's a counterstamp, and I'd guess it's from well after it was minted but not recent. The patina shows the W has worn through a bit like the rest of the reverse while the obverse stamp was much deeper.

To a large cent collector, it doesn't have a huge amount of value, but to a counterstamp collector it's a great find!

I'm just curious... How did you acquire it? Was it part of a piece of jewelry? I've never seen anything other than gold or silver coins placed in jewelry.
