Yesterday I went to the post office to purchase stamps in the vending machine. You know, the one that gives you back your change in dollars. After buying my stamps I looked at what change I received and discovered to my surprise a 2005P Sacagawea. I must say I am a little surprised. I thought the mint stopped producing Sacagawea for circulation after 2001. So did someone break open an uncirculated set or is the mint releasing Sacagawea's for circulation?

It is quite possible a few slipped out the door by accident or perhaps a collector cherry picked his/her rolls and spent the rest thus putting them into circulation. None the less it is rare to get a Sackie dated after 2001 in circulation.

I take my Grandfather to the bank each month and he gets about 300.00 worth from his bank each time so they definately still make them for circulation, and every time you go to the stamp machine they give you sacky's in change

Surely the Mint must produce and release an Annual Report that would state the mintages for circulation coins and for their various collector coins and sets.

This would then give figures for the dollar (what ever date) released each year or financial year.

Anyone know if this is the case and can provide figures?

Business Strike mintages in millions of coins

Year______P_______D__
2000____767.1___518.9
2001_____62.5____70.9
2002______3.9_____3.7
2003______3.1_____3.1
2004______2.7_____2.7
2005______2.5_____2.5
2006______2.8_____4.9

For the past three years:
http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_min...tion_figures

As you can see, the only years the Sac was minted for circulation were 2000 and 2001. The subsequent mintages were for US Mint Sets and rolls/bags for sale at the mint. If there was a 2005 in circulation, it almost certainly was put there by a collector and not the Fed.

BTW, the 06-D number looks suspicious. I don't know what accounts for the excess.

All I know is that they atleast release $300.00 a month into circulation and to think that is all they release is kind of crazy thinking, but my Grandfather buys $300.00 each and every month from his bank and never missed a month since 2000, he actually did the same thing with the SBA's and they are beautiful coins not all scratched up and he has them from all years.

There are millions of the coins released for circulation, just no dates other than 2000 and 2001, the other dates of these coins were not released ,, they are included in mint sets and forsale in Rolls from the mint.

The ones found in circulation for 2005 were put there by a collector who for whatever reason spent them. or had them spent from his or her collection without their knowledge.

He hoards them and always has, I don't think you can really call him a collector because he just collects everything and wants as much as he can cram in his tri level house (believe me you would know what I was talking about if you saw the inside of his house). He has a large (and I mean LARGE) safe at his house and he has (I know of) 4 safe deposit boxes and various banks. he is just one of them older men that accumulate things (he is in his upper 80's) he has stuff he picked up off the ground when he was in Germany in the war (guns and German medals and coins) and he has always been that way to hear him talk about how he was when he was a kid. He has stacks and stacks of old movie posters in his attic that he used to get from the movie theater in town (actually the small town I live in now)each week. If something ever happens to him it will take years to get everything cleaned out of his house and even then you better take a second look because he is also one who trust's no one and hides stuff everywhere. I asked him to make me a treasure map and put it in one of his safe deposit boxes but he will not do it, he just says find what you can find when I'm gone, and if you cant find it, it wasn't meant to be yours

The 2005 was a good find.

I just completed my Sacagawea set, and had to buy all the coins except for the 2000 and 2001 issues. My set is now complete, including proofs, and it is one of my favorite collections.

I did some math. From the mints sales figures WE 11/20

2006-P (total coins)
from bag sales 732,500
from roll sales 1,429,700
from mint sets 786,802
Total 2,949,002

2006-D
From bag sales 632,500
From roll sales 1,320,375
from mint sets 786,802
Total 2,739,677

Phillys are 150,000 short and the Denvers almost 2.2 Million over.

Also, Bryan, I'm sure if you could check your Grandfathers rolls you will find that the coins are all dated either 2000 or 2001. I can go to my bank right now and pick up a roll and it will be dated from those years.
