I have a Morgan silver dollar that appears to have a date error. It says 188 without the last digit. I've never seen anything like it. At first I thought it might of worn off but I don't know if thats possible because the definition of everything around it appears to be intact. There are no unusual marks that I can identify that give me any indication of what it was supposed to be. I'd love it if anyone could give me info on it.

188?-Morgan-Date-Error?-Very-Unusual.

its hard to say, that this coin is genuine, has a completely missing 4th numeral missing in the date,...usual suspects are grease on the die which does not allow some portions of the features or letters or small features to be produced...These are usually locally specific.. yet I have never heard of a date number missing.. I wonder if a magnet sticks to the coin? good luck..

No, a magnet doesn't seem to attract it. I've had quite a bit of experience with silver and this appears to be genuine (silver). I don't know if its a genuine Morgan though.

Odd, this. It very much resembles a Grease Fill, but the obverse of a Morgan is the "hammer" die and therefore much less likely to retain grease then the reverse "anvil" die. It's not out of the question, though - the grease was quite thick, and obverse grease fills aren't unknown with Morgans, just much less common than on the reverse.

It's a difficult call without larger images, and even those images might not be definitive.

Is it possible to see another picture of the date and the surrounding area,I believe I see another digit or number, but I would reserve my opinion till I could see those photos.......Thanks, Mike PS I would like to welcome you to this forum family, what else do you collect?
