This is a great coin I just received. Talk about a die pair being on their last legs! It's replacing my 67 w/rays in the 7070.

Makes you wonder how they can still strike coins, doesn't it?

I love Early Crushed-Die Nickels.

Man, those early Nickel coins must have driven the US Mint employees CRAZY! Talk about a hard metal to work with!

is that wear on the shield lines or weakness from the die?

I think it's a weak strike. It appears they were trying to squeak out the last few coins from this die pair.

Weakness in the shield lines is in the strike and not wear. That portion of the strike is opposite the void on the reverse design (part of the big 5) and does not strike up well.

As far as being on its last legs, I have seen many Shield nickels with dies deteriorated far more than this example. The mint would have kept using these die for quite some time more.
