The only thing that might have a hope of changing that is the next election cycle.
Indeed. The current government has failed to lead this country in an acceptable direction and that lack of leadership has severely impacted the confidence of the American people in general and the business people in particular. LOTS of people with money are hunkered down right now and avoiding risk at all costs. We are waiting for the idiocy in DC to end and for reasonable people to take over. Failing that, we can wait a LOT longer than just about anyone else.

I got this in an email the other day, I'll edit it for language.
Good stuff, Thunder. This is the classic Makers vs. Takers discussion. As nations, we have trained people to expect freebies. For generations, they have accepted the freebies. Now these are seen as "rights", as if anyone had a right to the wealth or property of another person. They don't. Freebies are gifts, not rights. Unfortunately, those who are trained not to make any effort to support themselves get very unhappy when they are required to do so. Well... tough noogie. Lots of us have worked very hard to EARN what we have. We have it in spite of the government and not because of it. We have rights too and private property rights are chief among them. Without private property and the rights appertaining thereto, there really aren't any other rights. PP rights are the bedrock of civilization. It is time to start training ALL of our citizens that governments exist to guarantee equal access to opportunities, not to guarantee successful outcomes.

Bottom line. America is doing the same thing as the British. America WILL GET the SAME results.
I agree. But unlike the Brits and the Canadians, we Americans have the right and the ability to defend ourselves and our property... and we WILL.

The prediction market INTRADE has Obama at about a 51% chance of reelection.
We just have to laugh at some of these things. Anyone else remember when the so-called main stream media said that the Reagan vs. Mondale race was "simply too close to call"? Too close to call? It was the greatest political landslide in American history! So much for the difference between honest polling and wishful thinking.

The Mayan calendar restart next year is nothing different any other calendar rollover.
If the Mayan calendar is so amazing, perhaps some Mayans who are well schooled in it could explain its finer points to the rest of us. What? They're all dead? Oh, well. Maybe they should have foreseen THAT in their calendar?!

Do you think Uncle Ben's speech today is going to help or hurt metals prices?
It turned out to be a non-event and life seems to be continuing regardless of Uncle Ben's mutterings. The chatter on the street is that there will be some Fed support of the economy, although it is unlikely to be discussed by anyone and will definitely not be called QE3 or anything else remotely suggestive of those failed efforts. Stocks and PMs were up today, so no new direction was established.
