Wow pretty interesting story. I dunno if the gov't should be able to profit off the money but why not?

it is just like anything else that gets confiscated from criminals that get busted that they sell at auction I would imagine, so I see no reason they shouldn't profit from it. Heck it wouldn't matter is they sold the 1000 dollar bills for a dollar it would still be profit to them because its things that got confiscated during a raid/bust. when I was younger we used to have police auctions around here and you could buy just about anything from computers,watches,coins and even cars and bicycles that had been confiscated from someone that got busted
