Has anyone found a plausible explanation for these die blunders?
On US coins, during this time, digit punches were often used to test die hardness

Nice buy! I think it's worth it, kick myself on the one from the summer. On page 388 Charlton Standard 63rd Edition "These layout markers are used on the matrix for centering the gang punches for the legend's letters. Normally they are removed from the matrix by polishing."
The example I have also has a repunched D in DEI and 5/5. Now from the explaination from Charlton, I would consider this coin to be the rarer then 8/5 variety Page 42 Charlton Standard 63rd editon "An interesting variety occured through a dateing blunder in which a "5" punch was used to repair a defective first "8". " So the 8/5 came about to continue production. For how long? The marker was used to layout for production then polished off wonder how many pieces would be run before they where happy with the layout?

Hard to say...I've seen 3 blundered Is on ebay over the last 4 months...the EF45 we both missed, the VF30 I just bought, a VG I bought a few weeks ago for $40 (the one Zonad pointed out at the start of this thread)
During that time frame I didnt see any 1858/1558 for sale.

That to me at least suggests that the 1858/1558 might be more rare (and only 40 or so have been certified). The blundered I is certainly rare too...but to what extent..I wonder...

I will have the VF30 hard slabbed, as it may be the highest graded one we may see for a while...

Are there any markers certified? (thinking about sending mine in). There was one example of the 1558/1858 certified that sold on ebay recently $1900.

Amateur seller, put it in with 50 cents and failed to mention ICCS in the title. Not a nice way to treat a very rare DIME!
