I was just wondering if anyone else thinks the RAM is just pushing out coin designs/ideas/themes just for the sake of filling a quota or something?
I mean a 10th anniversary coin for volunteers? and last year the 50c Australia day "Celebrate whats great" I feel that there is just too much of this at times and that a change to the reverse of a coin is losing its excitement that I think used to be there, especially when its as mundane as they have been.
Any thoughts?

US Commems, mid-50s destroyed the program for 20 years.

Hi Craig, I have had a break from coin collecting for since about 1990 and have just become interested again. At the time I was collecting I was turned off by the amount of products created just to milk money out of 'collectors'. Now having seen a couple of coin shops over the last few days, it seems even worse. In my opinion sticking the words 'collectors edition' on something, or creating products just to flog to collectors, is just marketing rubbish. See kids toys for examples outside of numismatics. To me coins that are collectable have some story behind them which has not been manufactured just to create a product. This means I like things which are rare or interesting (such as error coins) which have been found in circulation. Things get pretty uninteresting to me once you could not take a coin out of its packaging and have it easily accepted in any shop. I hope this is not too far off what you were looking at, but I think it is just about creating and selling products.

I don't get excited about NCLT, but what annoys me is that RAM makes commemorative coins, but only releases them as NCLT, and not to circulation. If it's a fit subject to commemorate, then they ought to release it to circulation as well. Those who want to can pay the Mint Shop's price for packaged, shiny examples, and I'll take my chances catching them in the wild.
Predecimals are great: they aren't making any more, and the market is well-established.
Apart from that, I collect a few series of old coins; and internationals: all circulated.

i dont collect them all just the ones I like and are reasonably priced. It seems to just keep going up though. Remember when getting a stamped coin at a show you could swap a plain MoR or what have you for one of the coin show specials. Then they went to $2 for a one dollar coin then to $3 now it is $10 per coin... Yay $10 to let me press a botton and not even see what it is doin to the coin. At the melb show this year the setup was at the wrong angle and you couldnt see the coin or the camera screen properly, I did my coin then had to sit and wait for another person to get one to see how it all worked. But $10 is getting too much I feel. I want to put some back out into the wild for others to find...

Wow, I didnt know that it had gone to $10.00, that is abit much! The RAM actually called me today and offered me a $10 gold Rams head coin as they did an "audit" and found that they had many more left over from the ballot! I told them no. They are not worth a great deal. I like the idea of just going through change to find my own coins, its inexpensive and more fun I think. I dont think they will be getting my money for a while.

You'll fit fine. There's a bunch of upside-downers here.

i think the lack of interest is shown in the $10 gold proof rock walaby coin, came on sale on Tuesday and its still available, a couple of years ago it would have been sold out in an hour or two.

That may be a good indication. Coins going to strong hands instead of weak ones.

I agree that there are way too many commemoratives issued these days. This year there have been 3 commemorative 20c and a commemorative $1. Sometimes when I get my change I have more commemoratives than regular coins.
Maybe I am just a bit cynical but it all seems as if it is purely profit driven. You only have to look at the RAM website to see that they are more interested in flogging their latest coin releases than they are of providing information (such as mintages) to the collector.
I am a member of the "Your Mint Story" RAM forum, which as far as I can see is a thinly veiled marketing project designed to squeeze more money out from collectors. I was bemused to read stories from members who had started off enjoying collecting $1 coin releases from the RAM. Now, however, it has become quite an ordeal as they feel duty bound to spend a small fortune buying the dozen or so $1 coin releases each year.
