Hello All,

Purchased this 1878 on ebay for $50 with free shipping. Trying to complete a basic 1878 set and seemed pretty cheap for a 7/8 tf. Would you mind taking a look at it? Does it appear legit? I am concerned about three areas: the A in America is touching the eagle wing on the reverse, the L in liberty on her crown seems fairly deeply struck, and the spot on the center of the eagle's chest seems suspicious. The coin passes a flip test - has the same sound as a genuine morgan. I don't, however, have a coin scale. I am most concerned about the A in america touching the eagle wing - is this a normal variation for 1878 7/8 tf?

Thanks for your comments!

Fascinating.

I see nothing amiss about the appearance - all the specific points you cite are normal for 7/8TF reverses. VAM-37 I think although I'm going to look some more. That one doesn't carry a huge premium, but at $50 you still did rather well.

SuperDave is right there again.

The eagle dipressed breast feathers is common on the 78s.
