Nice coin! What do you mean by "gotten by mistake"? Hopefully some of the Half Cent experts can weigh in on the variety.

Im not an expert on this series by any means, however, I enjoy early coppers very much.
Unfortunately imo I think this a contempary copy or chinese fake. The slope/angle of the bust line looks rather odd to me. After looking at a few examples of this year, I didnt find any others that look like yours. Plus the digits in the date look crude as well.
Hopefully an expert can weigh in as well.
I hope I'm wrong.

Looks good to me but, but the photo could be better, it's the stars that look wierd to me. But I'm no expert. PCGS has an 1809 on their grading site. Magnet test?

The photo is from my tablet. What kind of camera do most people use to take better coin photos? Gotten by mistake refers to someone thought it was a quarter and paid silver for it. A magnet does not stick to it (vice-versa) and when I x-rayed it, it came back 100% copper. Would a fake be copper? I didn't notice the slope of the bust line but I'm gonna reserch it. Thanks

There are 6 different Cohen varieties for the year 1809, yours looks like a Cohen-6.
the diagnostics for this coin are the curl of Liberty's hair is midway between the "09" digits of the date. The ninth star would be re-punched which I can't tell from the photo. On the reverse the highest leaf is almost midway between the last "S" in states and the "O" in of.
It's a fabulous grade, looks MS so the weight should be 5.44 grams
I'm not seeing the "slope" issue that algol was concerned about.

Quote: Gotten by mistake refers to someone thought it was a quarter and paid silver for it. "Someone" just made a rather handsome profit. C-6 sounds right - the most common 1809 variety but very_darn_difficult to find in original condition between the poor quality of the original planchets and 200 years of people cleaning them. Better pictures, or a local professional to inspect, are highly recommended for this coin. It looks to be at least AU condition, which would make it a $500 coin if the surfaces are original.
