I was looking at my dad's Lincoln Penny collection this weekend. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY during the 30s and 40s. He collected every 1909-1940 Lincoln Penny just from circulation with the exception of S-VDB, 11-S, 14-S, 15-S and 31-S. (No 22-Pl.) Total investment: 84 cents.

Take a look at the thread here about what is being found even today from bank rolls of pennies in just circulation for the same one cent investment. It's amazing! They're still out there! It might take a bit longer to come across them, but they're still out there!

I was lucky, I grew up in San Francisco. I filled every hole but the S-vdb from circulation back in the 60s. In fact I have 4 sets I filled up from ciculation. Believe it or not the ones I had trouble with were the Denver coins. I remember the 24D was the hard one for me.

A lot of my Grandfathers collection was from circulation. He told me the only three he had to buy were the SVDB, 14D and the 22 plain.

disclaimer! I did not include the 1922 plain. I have never found one in circulation. But I don't included it as part of the BASIC set.

In some ways that is one of the worst parts of being old and a coin collector. Back when I was a kid almost every coin we all look for today was as common as water. Just one of those I wish I knew then what I know now problems. My Dad always gave me my allowance in Silver Dollars and all were spent as cash. Roosevelt dimes just barely on the market. Most Dimes were Sitting Liberty, Liberty Heads and a lot of Mercury ones. No one thought anything of Standing Liberty quarters since they were as common as Liberty Head ones. Spending Indian Head Nickels, Liberty Head Nickels, etc. were just coins when I was a kid.

Over the past couple of years, I've managed to "find" every wheat except the SVDB, 31D, and the 22 no-D. The majority of these being found in 1000-count bags I've purchased from local (and not so local) dealers in my area. All of my purchases have been from brick and mortar stores. I've never bought an "unsearched lot" on ebay. Less than a year ago, I bought a Whitman and started filling the holes. I've titled this album my "I've paid $.045 per coin, or less album". I'm still kicking myself for finding and selling the 09S, 14D, and the 31S here at CCF before I thought about starting the album. It's not likely that I'm going to be lucky enough to find those 3 again anytime soon.

Scotty11, the 31S is actually not that hard to find. I see them fairly regularly in the 5$ bin at the local b and m. He pays 2 cents each for bulk wheats and does not go through them till after he buys them. I think it is so he can keep a "clear conscious" when he finds something really cool.
