Hi all,
I have a 1 kreuzer coin I have been trying to identify. At first I thought it would be easy--Austria, right?! The coin is ~24mm diameter and weighs 7.4g.
The obverse shows a seal with a crown at the top. The seal has a lion standing on riar legs, facing left. There are faint horizontal striations in that section. The upper left section doens't have any distinctive marks, just diagonal lines. There is no visible writing
The reverse shows 1 Kreuzer, the date, and a wreath. No clear mintmark. The date doesn't show up in the pix (or in real life) too well. My first impression was 1893, but can't guarantee it's not 18?3 or 18?8 or something else.
The
world coin gallery has an example from early 1800s which is even more worn than this one. I also found a helpful website (
medieval coinage) with lots of german states pix, but no match. I have a krause catalog which only goes back to 1901. I've gathered that Baden stopped making coins before the 1890s.
So either this is from Baden and I am wrong about the date, or it is 1893 but I'm wrong about the state, or maybe I'm all around wrong.

Thanks for any help,
-wheatiefan
