A post on this forum about 2 weeks ago prompted me to order 2 proof San Francisco Old Mint dollars from the mint. While I was on their site ordering the coins I added a 2006 10th ounce Eagle Proof to my cart. The coins arrived earlier today. The proof dollars are nice pieces, I'm very pleased with them. I have to say though, I'm totally floored by the gold piece. It's absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. I'm going to collect these now, I guess there's 20 more (1986-2005) out there waiting for me to scoop them up. Does anyone else collect these? Know of a good reputable dealer that stocks them? It might even be fun chasing a few of them down on ebay.

I know what you mean, TS. Last month, just on a whim, I bid on and got a 2000 1/10 Eagle (for $66) at my coin club's monthly meeting auction, and all of a sudden I was hooked.
I don't have a budget for major gold expenditures, but I figure I can afford one or two a month. At that rate, it'll only take me a couple years to catch up.

1/10th Gold Eagle is my second favorite coin. 2001 1/10th oz Gold Eagle uncirculated was the first Gold coin I ever purchased. It's being made into a pendant. Very nice coin. With the relatively low price tag on these right now it's a fantastic coin to collect. HEre is a picture of mine I took today for archival purposes, it's not a very flattering picture......This coin was handled with care hands ect/

I DO know what you mean about the Eagle Proof - spectacular is an understatement - no words to describe. I'm filling a piggy bank (literally) with the gold eagles, all sizes and it's a fun project...these aren't proofs, ofcourse, but it's a fun way to collect for a retirement splurge someday.
You may also like to look into the Canadian Maple Leafs and possibly the Kruggerands as they are .9999 compared to most U.S. (excluding the new Buffalo) at .999 grams/oz. Oh, and there's also the Chinese Panda's which are also fun!

You may want to hold off a little on the gold coin collection, as I understand the next year the mint will be issuing proof fractional gold buffalo coins. IF that happens then the collection of these coins would be a smart move as the issue is just starting and your in on the ground floor, so to speak.

Interesting idea, OldDan. What fraction of the buffalo do you think 1/10 ounce will be -- his snout and one hoof?

I collect the unc 1/10 eagles. I only have 5 of them right now but one of them is the 1999w error, so I will probably keep going.
I think the 1/10 oz. has a pretty good following because of the price, which is a good thing. I think the 1/4 and 1/2 will be winners also if you can afford them because they have a pretty low mintage.

That's a great idea ds, a piggy bank filled with gold! I can almost hear the "clink" everytime you drop another one in!

Speaking of mintage, does anybody have mintage figures yet on the 2006 Eagle series--gold or silver?
