My friend at work just started metal detecting and knows I collect coins. So I tell him to bring anything interesting in to show me. This morning he brought in an 1883 IHC with VF - XF details. But of course it was a little corroded. He was chomping at the bit to clean it and I told him to do nothing for now. So, the big question, what should he do? At least to disolve the mud and dirt?

By the way, he still hasn't found any wheaties.

Lots of guys on different metal detecting forums soak their coins in olive oil to loosen sediment, etc, for what its worth.

I sometimes boil a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in the microwave, then drop the coin in. The reaction will loosen lots of corrosion. This process may also slightly darken the coin.
Olive oil is organic and will decay over time, and acids may damage the coin when put up for storage. I recommend mineral oil for a soak or cleaning.

Distilled water soak should remove most of the dirt
followed by acetone dip should remove remaining organic material
followed by distilled water soak to remove all acetone residue
dry and apply verdicare to the greenies

He just keeps doing it. He went out at lunch and pulled out another IHC and last night he found this:

Alot of the LMC's I find are so corroded they're barely recognizable. Its amazing to me that IHC's survive in the ground for so long. And by the way great find on the dime!
