Greetings folks. This is my first post to your group and I look forward to interacting more with you. I got back into coin collecting this past year and many of my web searches led me to this form, so I decided to join in on the fun!

Anyway, I discovered these 2 penny errors recently while going through some change. The first coin, is a 1990 Lincoln Memorial and I am not quite sure what type of error it is? The second coin, a 1997 Lincoln Memorial which I think is a capped die, is a bit more obvious than the first. Does anybody have any idea what might be the exact errors that I have? Are either of these something that I should look into having graded? In my opinin, the 1997 Lincoln coin is still in Mint State due to the color and luster (the scan of the obverse doesn't do it justice, the reverse gives you an idea of the true luster of the coin).

Well that is all for now. I look forward to learning more from this community and also hopefully being able to contribute back as I gain more expertise.

Thank you,
Doug

Is the reverse on the 1990 normal or does it have a similar appearance? I believe it is an extreme example of a coin Struck Through Grease. Notice the thin parallel lines running NE>SW- those are the original striations found on Zincoln blanks before they are struck. The lines can be preserved when a coin is Struck Through Grease but anything else will obliterate them.

The second coin was struck through a late stage capped die, not to be confused with the die cap itself- a very rare and desirable error resembling the rough shape of a bottle cap. Late stage means that the die cap has struck so many coins that no trace of the brockage remains, so look for a ghost image of the Memorial. This error is not uncommon and would be worth $5-10. If you see any traces of the Memorial brockage, then you have a late stage brockage which would be worth a bit more.

Thank you very much for the information. I have attached a scan of the 1990 penny's reverse. I do not see the diagonal marks which are so prevalent on the obverse, but there are red highlights in the image. This may just be the difference in the color highlights as the coin is turning RD/BN.

Both obverses appear to be struck through late stage die caps.
