Doesn't seem likely...but I received this back in change and it immediately caught my eye.

It's the 2004 on the left:

What makes you think it is fake? If you are pointing out the silver colored part......that is just the zinc core showing through after the road rash that coin seems to have received.
Rest in Peace

The one on the left is probably a Dryer Coin. The one on the right is a shiny new penny.

I didn't really think it was counterfeit but I guess with the copper layer removed it definitely makes the penny look funny. I appreciate everyone's help.

Your assuming a counterfeiter knows that. Think of all the people that send in a $1 valued coin to a TPGS for slabbing and grading. How about the women that spend a fortune in fas in their cars going from store to store to save $0.10?

You are also comparing the old 2004 design to the newer 2010 design.

Someone just gave me a 1976 D penny that is plated with something, it still weighs the same as a regular copper penny but is silver looking in nature. It's not painted either.

That is one of the lastest things smugglers do to get stolen Silver into the country. They simply plate coins with Silver and carry it as pocket change. the weight is due to the removal of some of the Copper first
Possibly it's one of the millions of coins kids play with in chem labs everywhere.

Here is one on ebay, listing number 280738031039 I've never seen anything like it before. The one I have is in much better condition than this one, I see it's not really worth anything which is fine, just curious as usual.

It's been a very long day at work today... Thanks for that one Carl!

everything, those coins are "experiments" inside jr. high, and high school chem lab. Nothing more, nothing less.
