Okay, CCF members - since I'm a relative noob here I need your expertise. I went to my local dealer (Abbott's Coins) with the intention of filling a hole in my Dansco album, and came home with this.
I must've studied twenty-five different circulated Morgans with CC mint marks (since I didn't have any yet), and finally settled on this one. I took my time, and narrowed my choices to two, then one. This is the one that followed me home. I paid $110.00 cash. The one that I did not choose had a lower price that reflected cleaning, so it was rejected.
She's been around the block a few times, but I liked the general luster and appearance. Now she can rest comfortably in my album for the enjoyment of my heirs.
I think I did okay for the $$ - what say you ? Edited by CitizenPatriot 09/07/2011 10:12 am

Yeah, I'd be pretty happy with that if I were you. The surfaces look a little "funny" but I believe that's due to lighting and not the coin itself.
VAM-22, if you're interested in the variety.

Nice coin! I have been wanting one these! Good eye appeal! I am very new to grading morgans. Here goes anyway. Red Book says that: VF20 - Two thirds of hair lines from top of forehead to ear visible. Ear is well defined. Feathers on eagles breast worn. EF40 - All hair lines strong and ear bold. Eagle's feathers all plain but with slight wear on the breast and wing tips. I say VF35. Red Book prices: VF20: $100.00; EF40: $150.00 Numismedia prices: VF20: $93.00; EF40: $100.00

Thanks for the informative replies - I welcome all because it adds to my admittedly limited knowledge base. Quote: I'm thinking it *just* noses AU50. SuperDave, in your opinion, would it be worth the time and expense this get this one cleaned - er, I mean "conserved" - and then graded, or would I just be wasting my $$ ? As it stands right now it is resting comfortably in my Dansco album in the safe deposit box.......

Quote: The surfaces look a little "funny" but I believe that's due to lighting and not the coin itself. Yes, I'm looking at it on a different, older monitor (at work) and the color is off. It looked much more pleasing when I uploaded it this morning. Lighting was a combination of direct and indirect, hot (tungsten light from above, strobe flash from the right) on a background of black velvet. I adjusted it slightly in Photoshop to render the correct color tones, but I'm relatively new to this typwe of photography. This could explain the "funny" look. Thanks again for the replies, y'all.

I also lean towards AU50. I don't see any points of significant wear that would drop it down into the Fine grades, although it appears to have a few scratches.

That's two votes for AU-50, thanks. I'm thinking I might get her out again to photograph without the flip, just to get a better look.

AU-50 sounds about right for this coin. Toning and marks are not at all unusual for the grade ... not an unattractive coin.

Thanks, Fenton....seems we are forming a concensus, and I am learning more about grading in the process. I appreciate your input. Quote: AU-50 sounds about right for this coin. Toning and marks are not at all unusual for the grade ... not an unattractive coin.

I would say EF-45 but it could just get AU-50.

Thanks for the comments. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it might be economically viable to submit this one for proper "conservation" and possible grading ? Or am I better off just enjoying it in my album ?

Looks AU50 to me, and no why spend the money to "conserve" an AU coin? Its not cost effective....

I would recommend you leave this coin as-is. For circulated grades, collectors prefer and will pay a premium for original toning. If this particular coin were dipped, it would lose value.
