I picked this one up about 4 months ago for $24:

1927-SLQ
1927-SLQ

The seller didn't grade it other than to to say it was "very nice" and "toned."

It is a very dark coin, but there's still quite a lot of detail visible. My best guess would be an XF40, although some parts (like the date) seem to be better defined than the example shown for XF40 on the PGCS PhotoGrade site. Maybe even an XF45?

What do you think?

Also, is this what is considered a "full head" SLQ? I've seen the term used before, but I'm not sure exactly what it means.

Thanks!

It looks like a solid crusty EF but not Full Head. That descriptor is only used on high AU-MS coins as the head details wear off quickly if they were ever there in the first place. You need to see the ear hole and three leaves in the head wreath for FH status.

Solid EF-40. Might go EF-45 on this one. This coin would not be FH but it looks like it it may have at one point because the strike is very sharp. Very nice coin!
Rest in Peace

I'm wondering if the coin was smoked to cover scracthes.

Not bad looking, I could see XF.

Thanks for posting this picture.
Have any of you ever seen a coin that gave you flashbacks to your younger years and those feelings you would get when, as a kid, you were looking at 'old' coins for the first time? Like discovering something new... Its a great feeling that I get every so often, and this coin just gave it to me.

I really like the antique patina on "darkish" coins like this one and search them out.
Just a quirk of mine I guess.

Glad you like it, guys!

I was looking for a decent example within my budget. All the others I saw with this amount of detail looked shiny and new and were priced accordingly. I figure I got this one at a lower price because of the "toning," but I'm perfectly happy with it.
