Picked this up for $30 in an Arizona coin shop last week. In hand, the fields are very mirrored but, the coin was mishandled with fingerprints on the obverse. Don't know if it's a proof or not. What are your thoughts? swcoin.ecrater.com

Looks possible. Your third photo shows a little cameo effect going on and the strike looks very bold and sharp like a proof would have. But I am no pro.Hope it turns out to be a proof. John1

Hmm. Nice coin there first off. I'd wager there's a 65% chance it IS a proof. Might just be luster though. The strike seems a little weak on the headress though.

Wow, she's sure pretty! Don't know if it is a proof though. That would be a steal if it is a proof!

For comparison here's my 81 Proof. Mine also has fingerprints on the obverse. With your coin in hand, you can hopefully compare the sharpness of strike etc. against mine. Mine is darkly toned instead of red though.. Paleoguy

Strike does not quite look sharp enough and the luster appears to be a bit too frosty for a proof strike. IHCs can occasionally be found with PL surfaces, I am not sure if it stems from the reuse of proof dies or if the fresh dies were polished a bit before first use. Pictured below is an IHC I owned a couple years ago, certified MS-63 by ICG. The obverse looked like any other normal business strike but the reverse had blazing mirrors with a bit of cameo.

Nice coin! If I had a Snow guide for 1892, I'd look for the proof markers. Perhaps it's just the pics, but something about the date area looks like mid-die state for business strike. The date area on proofs is usually crisper due to much shorter runs per die.

To satisfy my curiosity...I rounded up the 3 obverse proof dies for 1892, based on date position. With a total mintage of 2745, 3 total obverse dies sounds right. The bottom die seems scarcer.

Thanks everyone. Paleoguy45, beautiful coin! I've seen PL IHC's before but this one had a slight cameo appearance but nonetheless, had to snag it for $30. I am having my doubts too but, who knows. I have to pick up an 1880 from Rick Snow at Long Beach Coin show on Friday. Maybe I'll show it to him. Thanks DV! You go out of your way....always ;)

$30 is a great price for any 120 year old piece of copper that beautiful.

Great coin for $30 I learn something every time I make a photo reference. But, Snow should be able to eyeball that one.
