Whites 1980 Metal Detector? - Coin Community Forum

kenscott Pillar of the Community United States 787 Posts	Posted 09/07/2011 4:47 pm Hello, An elderly friend of mine has a mid 1980's White's metal detector he is asking $75 for. At the time, it was one of their top models. It is in good condition with original batteries, manual, and even the headphones. Is this a good buy or should I go for a modern one? In short, is the technology today worth the extra money for a modern metal detector or will this one do just fine for a beginner like me? Kenscott Report this Post to the Staff

pls Rest in Peace United States 1729 Posts	Posted 09/07/2011 5:31 pm I started coinshooting with an older White's detector and used it until I finally decided to upgrade. Although I'm not familiar with this particular model, my experience with old vs. new technology tells me that with this detector, if it's in good shape, you should be able to spot 95%+ of all coins with this one, costing $75, that you would with a newer one at 3 to 4 times the price. LTMets44 Pillar of the Community United States 580 Posts	Posted 09/07/2011 7:03 pm My father has one of those. He bought it in the early 80's and is in great condition. I think he paid about $300 back then. We just pulled it out of the basement and started learning how to use it again. I think $75 is a good price. Report this Post to the Staff
