barryg Pillar of the Community United States 5862 Posts	Posted 09/07/2011 5:25 pm I have heard that these coins are widely counterfeited, but I got this pair from my 78-year-old Chinese father-in-law who has had them since he was a child (in China), so I'm pretty confident they are authentic: My wife is convinced they are extremely valuable, whereas the only thing I'm certain of is that they are probably at least worth silver melt value (whatever that is). I'm assuming that, despite the counterfeit versions out there, these are not really considered rare and that in order to be truly valuable they would need to be in mint condition, which these are not. The one on the left is significantly worn, while the one on the right seems to be in better shape. Anyway... Can somebody tell me something about their potential value? First of all, what is the actual silver content? I'm guessing 90%, but that's just a guess. Second of all, do these have much value to collectors above and beyond the silver melt value in their current condition? Thanks! As I said, I know that these get counterfeited all the time, but I have no idea how much genuine examples are actually worth (especially in this condition). It is unfortunately the most common date, and among the least valuable. However, they do still command a premium over the silver value - each piece contains around 0.77 OZ ASW, putting the melt value at around $46 ish for the pair at todays lower silver price. As I said, other than silver value I had no idea whether these were even collectable or not, and all I seem to find on ebay are obvious fakes.
