Found this in my wallet a few weeks ago, it's like any other I have encountered... and I see many on a daily basis!

I don't think many of the people from USA see these a lot, so I have a picture as compparisment below.

At first, it looked like harsh wear--but the pattern on the rim is regular. I'm baffled.

yes very strange, and the ultra wear marks or scratches doesn't make it a lot easier on it..
Almost looks like someone purposely took this coin and beat it with a meat grinder for a few hours
Although it reminds me of scratches like on a unstruck coin planchet or something I have no idea whatsoever.

I would tend to say it's a forgery.
I have myself a similar looking 50 cent-coin from Spain.
I kept it because I believe it's counterfeit.

That could be a good explanation? Is there much difference in weight?
If such coins were forged in large quantities, they might add "wear" before released so details get less scrutiny

That would be possible, as I have heard this before..
But the weight is correct, it's non magnetical as it should be and most people on a Dutch forum agree it's real.
Unfortuanetly I can not translate some of the terms they use for their explenations :(
So for now I just put it in the pot with coin "errors"..
