I am confused some of my american coins have a d in or near the date and some dont can someone please tell me why?

It is the mintmark of the Denver mint.

If you are looking at modern coins, the d on the obverse is for Denver like DL20K stated. If there is no mint mark then it was minted in Philadelphia.

Actually, some more modern coins actually have a P now for Philadelphia, but in the past it was no mint mark that represented Phili.

And if you find an "S" on a USA coin? San Francisco mint. CC? Carson City, but I can almost guarantee that you won't find any CC coins floating around.
