I was just going through my jar of Canadian coins and I was noticing that my loonies ($1 coin) look as if they've been heavily used. I don't think they have a circulating $1 note now so that could be why.

David,
The Candaian government stopped printing $1 notes- many have speculated that only if the US government does the same will dollar coins circulate. Longevity of coins is much greater than notes, they are therfore much less expensive to the government.

Don, I agree. I would truly love to see the $1 note eliminated. Coins are much more durable. I feel $1 coins are the way to go. However I don't want to see anymore presidents on them. I also agree $1 coins will never flourish unless the paper note is eliminted.

The Canadian paper $1.00 was not printed after 1987 and the $2.00 after 1996. From time to time there is talk of a $5.00 coin and if they decide to do it there probably won't be much resitance due to the success of the one and two dollar coins.

Bromac, thanks for that information. I am very impressed how well these coins are excepted in Canada. I wish the US would follow the RCM. By the way, I just ordered my Terry Fox loonie!

I know I've mentioned this before but after 18 years of 1 dollar coins and 9 years of 2 dollar coins I can't recall anyone complaining about the weight of coins in their pocket.

The U.S. simply needs to make the change to $1 coins. If lugging around a little weight in our pockets is our biggest problem, we are quite fortunate. With regard to $1 coins -- bring on the Presidential Series!

I will argue this "weight" logic till I die. I always make sure I have at least $3 in change (usually quarters) before leaving for work. By the end of a week, plus the weekend, I have a pocket full of change as I seldom ever use the change I carry but still, for some unknown reason, need to know when I start the work week I am carrying at least $3 for whatever. Now my point is just this! Three Sacagaweas is a lot lighter than 12 quarters isn't it and I can't get Sacagawea dollar coins in this area? Bluntly put the dollar has NOT failed because the American people won't use them. Dollar coins fail because the BANKS won't call them out and don't want a darn thing to do with them or the half dollar. If anyone reading this thinks a dollar coin is heavy I would suggest you start exercising or see a doctor right away! Anything would be better than a filthy, crumpled up dollar note in my opinion. Unless, of course, they put another dead President on it as they are about to do with the dollars. Guess we Americans don't have anything else to be proud of like other nations?
