While searching half dollar boxes, my wife fund his 38D Walker. I couldnt believe she found this coin. 490,000 of them made, and she finds one in a roll 73 years later. Just awesome. This puppy is going to be graded. I know its only a VG, but its a key date, so graded it gets.

Nice coin, grading would be a waste of money.

That one looks at least F-12 to me. Maybe $100/$125. Great find. Does she get half?

Fredd I always like to have key coins graded. I don't consider it a waste of money even were it an AG.
It's more like I might get to hold it now and again. LOL

Congrats Smoker, I found one too, although I did pay the teller $100 for the roll of 90% halves which contained Franklins, Walkers, and the 38D. You got yours the best way, paying only face.

Awesome find! I respect your choice to have it graded but I have about 10 38 Ds ranging from VG to AU and wouldn't send any of them out to be slabbed. Just not worth it to me. I was just wondering why you get all your keys slabbed? This is in no way a criticism. It is your coin and you certainly have every right to do what you would like with it. I am just curious.

My main reason for grading keys is the authenticity cant be questioned. Its slabbed, its genuine. It also nails down a grade. You can argue about wether the service graded a particular coin hi or low, but still, if I have a coin in a slab graded at AU58(not this one, just an example) then I can reasonably ask AU58 price for it. You can best believe I ever get a 16D Mercor 14D LWC or the like, they will be graded too. Hehehehe, guys, the wife is as into the collecting as I am. Thats her coin and as I said, I will be lucky to be able to fondle it. LOL You should see her Merc book. Only things missing are the 16D and 21D.

Good find, but I heartily concur that slabbing this coin would be a waste of money. Even though this coin is a key date in terms of price, there are plenty of them in the marketplace. At the FUN show last year, one dealer friend of mine had 14 rolls for sale at his table! At the time, they were wholesaling at about $85-$90, each. I've since managed to buy some problem-free ones for $58-$65 in F-VF at shows. While most dealers tend to push the price on these so-called keys, some dealers obviously want to move this overrated date. IMHO, a few other overrated keys are the 1921 and 1928 Peace dollars. For these dates especially, it pays to shop around.

The 1928 I will have to disagree with. 360k or so minted and population estimates put it under 200k. I will say there are double the counterfeited 1928 Peace dollars than there were ever minted. I saw one in a slab that was AU something. It was not one of the top two that we like to think of as being reputable.
