Hello all!
For the past few years, we've been having many commemorative coins; quarters, loonies & toonies.
All the Olympic quarters, both colourized and non-colourized along with the loonie. The 2010 poppy quarter. The 2008 Quebec toonie, the 2010 Navy loonie, 2010 Saskatchewan Roughrider loonie, 2009 Montreal Canadiens loonie. It was hard to keep up.
Is the mint taking a break this year? Are there any commemorative coins with a 2011 date? The only variation I've heard of is the 2011 magnetic and non-magnetic cent. So are we getting a break this year from all the commemoratives or are there some I'm not aware of?

I haven't heard anything about a commemorative coin for circulation either. And I am watching this "field" rather closely.
I think, well, it's actually just a guess, the lack of cc for circualtion thus far could be related to the fact that "new" Loonies and Toonies are being readied for introduction.

Quote: Prepare for an onslaught of commemeratives once the new loonies and toonies come out. There's been a lot of talk about the new loonies and toonies coming out next year. Anyone have a link to where I can read about them? I can't find much from a google search.

Yes, there will be new loonies and toonies unfortunately. They are switching over to steel and they will be using a new engraving/etching process that will allow them to change designs and features on the coins very easily from year to year. So expect the Mint to take full advantage of that by producing several commeratives.

I found an article on the new coins: http://www.coinworld.com/articles/c...o-high-tech/They're going "high tech" but their appearance doesn't sound like it's going to change and they will be lighter in weight. Was counterfeiting the $1 and $2 coins a big problem?

There have been counterfeit $2 coins Quote: From the article linked to by match box ""Another deterrent to counterfeiting will be the unique EMS, or "electromagnetic signal," of both coins"" I'm sure the government will put this feature to good use
