It absolutely amazes me when someone takes a great coin and "makes it better". That is sickening. I recently looked at a really nice Barber dime. A 1900 S. At first I thought xf45-au50. Till I put the loop on it and saw the scratches from the wire brush........The guy is a metal detectorist. He finds a lot of stuff. But I finally had to tell him I would not buy anymore of his stuff till he stops CLEANING IT. I just can't get it through to him that he ruins those coins. The last time, he complained that none of the collectors will buy from him anymore. I told him why but he just does not get it. I think he is of the opinion that we are all going haggle with him and get a lesser price because the coin has toning! I really do think that is what he is afraid of.

When the picture popped up on my screen I immediately said "EESH! Yeah, that's a LITTLE harsh!" It's coming from Vietnam and the seller indicates "scratches and nicks at some point", implying, I guess, that he didn't do it. Looked like a pretty nice coin at one time, taking for granted that it's actually a coin and not a fancy slug of some base metal. It looks real to me but, then again, if I see something flying around in my bedroom at night it looks to me like the tooth fairy waitin' for me to drop "just one more?"

And she's out of her mind because I paid a lotta money for some of these!

On the other hand, I have a '78s that I bought from my local dealer as an EF, and it has EF detail (almost bordering on AU) but looks like it was cleaned at one point but not harshly. Very few hairlines and such, but you can tell that it was, at least, rubbed - and is re-toning nicely. And it looks WAAAAY better than that poor thing.

When will people learn; 'clean' is one thing, 'Brillo pad' is another, and never the 'twain shall meet!

Oh that poor coin . Looks like the old CD-ROM that I keep on my computer desk and use for a coaster.
