Hi

Dusting her cupboards my friend found the following coin, and we are both baffled about what it really is as we cant find any info about it after searching quite diligently on the net.

The coin is Large, old UK Crown size.

Gold colour (pretty bright, almost yellow)
has the visage of Churchill facing to the right with 'CHURCHILL' curving around the visage to the right, in gold. The background is Lacquered in BLACK.

on the reverse

Elizabeth 11 dei Gratia Regina F.D in gold writing, a portrait of the Queen Mother (elizabeth 2) facing right in Gold, and then again, background is black Lacquer. 1965 is written in gold under the visage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

Simone

Without a picture, I'm only guessing, but it sounds like a standard Churchill crown that has been enamelled.

As the unadorned coin is considered by many to be the ugliest crown ever produced, this treatment may have improved it.

Value is hard to assess without pics.
Are you getting a hint here maybe?

Except for the coloring, you are describing a common 1965 Churchill Crown. The coin itself is copper-nickel, so not especially valuable.

The coloring would have been added post-mint. There are professional companies that do this, or it may have been an amateur job. Pix would help.

In USA, there are lots of companies making colorized versions of 50 State Quarters. Most collectors don't think they add any value.

that's a U.K. Crown, or five-shillings, of 1965, marking the death on 24 January 1965, aged 90, of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS, Hon. RA.

Someone has colourized yours: that was common in the Victorian era, and is having a resurgence now, but I've never seen that treatment given to a Churchill Crown. I'd be interested if you could put up some pics.

The Queen Elizabeth II (sometimes abbreviated to QE2) on your coin is the same Queen that we have now: next year will be her 60th Anniversary of her accession as Queen. Churchill was Prime Minister when the Queen acceded, and for three years thereafter.

The Queen Mother, who was called Queen Elizabeth while her husband reigned, was called the Queen Mother after his death. She died in 2002, aged 101. She was the mother of QE2.

By the way: the Brits never put their nationality on their coins, nor on their stamps. They tell you who their Queen is, and leave it to you to work out the rest. The Queen appears on the coinage of 25 or so other countries, and none of us mind telling you where the coin is from.

I will upload some pictures first thing in the morning, thanks for the responses!

If someone did go to the trouble to add the colour , its a very professional job :)

sorry about the poor quality pictures, I had to scan the coin but can try and upload better maybe later. The coin appears to be thicker than a normal Crown , about 4-5 mm, more like a medal.
