about 2 weeks ago I bought an 1878-cc in a GSA holder. It wasn't a coin I was wanting to purchase but got it at way below bid. My intent was to either sell it and make a little or trade it on something I need for my morgan set. I took it to a local coin show this past weekend and was told if I had the matching cert he'd give me $75 more for it. My question is do those certs really carry that much premium or was this just a haggling method?

The box and certs are nice to have but I do not think it would be worth an extra $75, maybe $20-25 tops.

Thats what I was thinking....I have the box....however the cert card does not match the coin....it's for an 83....I had actually bought an 83 from the same guy and there was an 85 card in it....went through his others but no 78 to be had

Do you folks think it would be worth getting it graded by NGC ?
They will grade it and keep it in the original GSA holder.

The genuine COA's matching the year of the coin (first 2 numbers are the year) can be worth a minium of $5 up to $500. For example the 82, 83, 84 are fairly common as are the coins in GSA holders, and can be had for around $5. The 78, 80, 81, & 85 sell for $20 to $60. The 90 & 91 can run you around $300. And the 79, if you can find one, will cost around $500. All prices are for prestine examples. You might be able to do better with your dealer or at a coin show. Be very careful, and watch for counterfeit ones, especially the 90, 91, and 79.

I have a similar problem with an 82 and 83 cc that have damaged coas and boxes (coins are fine). Does it really make a difference if there is no coa. Also would there be a way to tell if the coa is from a different set, but same year. I'm trying to figure if its worthwhile to acquire new ones.
